Vacuum pumps are used in research to accelerate evaporation of liquids, and to cause those liquids to evaporate at lower than normal temperatures. Just as the lower air pressure of mountain elevations reduces the boiling point of water, vacuum pumps can create conditions in a laboratory that will permit water and other liquids to "boil" at room temperature. This is useful in many research procedures.
